Languages at PHS

PHS flies 40 Flags that represent the languages spoken by our school community. But for us, internationalism is more than “Flags, Fashion and Food,” it is a state of mind, heart, and spirit:  We strive to become such thoughtful world citizens that we can skillfully communicate across languages, cultures, and economies.  We strive to enhance our awareness so deeply that we can think beyond the paradigms we live in to include the world in our minds and lives.  Our international philosophy invites everyone to contribute and win.

Internationalism and the IB Learner -

From the IB perspective, internationalism is the development of  “citizens of the world” with young people who are responsible, active participants in their local and national communities, as well as in the broader international community. IB emphasizes education of the whole person and focuses on the development of critical thinking and language skills necessary for success in the global community. Students are taught to be international and active learners as described in the IB Learner Profile.  They are well-rounded individuals and engaged citizens, who gain practical experience by being part of an international community.

“It’s hard to genuinely care about saving the planet if you don’t care about the students next to you in class”  Julian Edwards, IB World Magazine, January 2008

The mission statement of the International Baccalaureate Organization…

The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect

To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
