Next artist lecture is on Tuesday, Oct. 7th held from 2:20-2:50 pm in the presentations room! Brian Kershisnik will be the guest artist for this presentation.

ap course description

Advanced Placement Studio Art class is an advanced course that will require your maturity, responsibility, and self-motivation. In this course you will be involved in art making, study of art issues and understanding our unfolding contemporary culture. Art making is not for the fate of heart. It requires uncanny self perception, cultural awareness and just plain hard work.
This course requires your commitment in and out of the classroom. Your success will depend upon it! The projects assigned, while possessing requirements, should be executed with your own life experiences and interests in mind. I’m not sure at the final destination of where this course will take us, because you and your classmates will help determine this year’s journey. At the end of this course you are required to take the AP studio test in order to receive Advanced Studies credit. The IB students will need to meet the appropriate requirements for the HL/SL diploma.

the advanced placement course is designed to help students prepare for and successfully pass the college board's advance placement studio art test. the ap studio art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. ap studio art is not based on a written examination; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. phs ap studio art candidates prepare their portfolios through this ap course. for additional information, student examples, and calendar please visit the college board. The objectives of this course is to assist students in preparing a portfolio of artwork. The focus of the course is this portfolio which students submit for evaluation by the examiners. The students must develop self-discipline, personal insight, critical judgment, and technical skill - all necessary for the preparation of this portfolio. The students should be able to demonstrate the interrelationship between personal research and studio work, in both oral and written form. By the end of the course the students should be able to critically analyze the formal, technical and aesthetic qualities of art and design. They should be able to relate this material to its cultural, historical and social context.

The AP Program offers three portfolios: Drawing, 2-D Design, and 3-D Design. The portfolios share a basic, three-section structure, which requires the student to show a fundamental competence and range of understanding in visual concerns (and methods). Each of the portfolios asks the student to demonstrate a depth of investigation and process of discovery through the concentration section (Section II). In the breadth section (Section III), the student is asked to demonstrate a serious grounding in visual principles and material techniques. The quality section (Section I) permits the student to select the works that best exhibit a synthesis of form, technique, and content.

what are the differences between the IB art and AP studio art? The primary difference is in the structure of the portfolio. There are no separate sections in the IB portfolio as there are in the AP portfolio. Another difference is in the method of evaluation. The IB portfolio is evaluated by the teacher, a visiting examiner who comes in person and reviews the work. This gives the student a chance to actually talk with the examiner. And photographs - not slides - of student work, along with sections of the research workbook, are sent to the central office in Cardiff for moderation (a check for consistency among work of students around the world.) The research workbook is evaluated by the visiting examiner along with the portfolio, whereas in the AP course only finished works, whether original works or slides of work, are evaluated.

visual journals

Keeping an art journal is a powerful way to move beyond words and begin to express your daily experiences also with images. This journal will become a invaluable resource as you use the entries as triggers to inspire, direct and shape your artwork.
There are many ways to keep a visual arts journal. You can begin by collecting interesting images from old magazines to create collages, draw, paint, etc. Almost any visual expression will do. Try working with a symbol for an abstract idea that is a significant part of your life. What message does the image have for you? What other images does this one call to mind? What memories does it evoke? When we use images in our journals, we often come to deeper insights about ourselves and the world around us. See http://www.visualjournaling.com for additional examples and approaches.
