It requires uncanny self perception, cultural awareness and just plain hard work. The projects assigned, while possessing requirements, should be executed with your own life experiences and interests in mind. I’m not sure at the final destination of where this course will take us, because you and your classmates will help determine this year’s journey.

this course is an introduction to fundamental elements and principles of drawing. this course is a pre requisite for all other art classes. studio practice emphasizing line, shape, light-dark, texture, and composition as used in visual art and design is emphasized. aesthetic valuing, artistic, perception/criticism, production/creative expression, historical cultural context, connections/applications. this studio course is designed to provide students with technical skills to be able to observe reality and solve studio problems.“creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. art is knowing which ones to keep.” I will help you to learn to harness your creativity and shape your understanding of art.

visual journals/sketchbook assignments

Keeping an art journal is a powerful way to move beyond words and begin to express your daily experiences also with images. This journal will become a invaluable resource as you use the entries as triggers to inspire, direct and shape your artwork. There are many ways to keep a visual arts journal. You can begin by collecting interesting images from old magazines to create collages, draw, paint, etc. Almost any visual expression will do. Try working with a symbol for an abstract idea that is a significant part of your life. What message does the image have for you? What other images does this one call to mind? What memories does it evoke? When we use images in our journals, we often come to deeper insights about ourselves and the world around us. Students also have the option of chosing from the sketch assignments below and encorporate them into their visual journals.
