Prerequisite: Admission by referral and application and completion of assigned summer reading program. Teacher approval necessary for enrollment in class.

This course is the first class in the Advanced English Placement track. Students study all genres of literature, the classics, and non-fiction. Students will develop critical thinking and writing skills. Students will also learn to write all of the basic essay forms with an emphasis on persuasion. Applications will be distributed to incoming 8^th grade students in the early spring. An entrance exam will also be given in the early spring. Students must complete summer reading and writing to be placed in this class. Placement is based on grades in middle school English classes, DRP reading test scores, Entrance exam, Teacher recommendation, and satisfactory completion of the summer work.
