IB French SL (AS, EL) Grades
Offered: 11-12 Credit:
1.0 for 1 year 2.0 for 2 years Course description:
This course is designed to prepare students for the IB French
Language B standard level examination.
Students are invited to appreciate and develop a deeper understanding
of French Language and Culture.
Students will participate in various activities such as reading of
novels, French newspapers, and magazines, listening to live French
television, writing essays (diaries, newspaper articles, writing texts in
various formats, and projects).
Students will exchange discussions, oral presentations, use of target
language in class (with the teacher and amongst peers), debates, and projects
(audio, video). This course will offer students maximum communication and
interaction opportunities in the four language skills of listening, speaking,
reading, and writing through the exploration of a wide range of francophone
texts. Students will develop
spontaneous aural expressions related to daily life and Francophone
culture. They will develop the
awareness of cultural, social, and political issues. The course will allow students to reach a
fluency level in writing and speaking. Students will explore
a variety of authentic texts and media that will provide an in-context
grammar review. Students will research
topics on history of different French countries of the world including their
geography, music, arts, literature, cultural aspects, as well as their
political and social issues. As a
result, students will develop an appreciation for different perspectives of
people from other regions of the world. Individual practice and collaborative partnering are
constantly provided to increase participation which is evaluated by teacher
and peers. The classroom is organized in a various level approach with
each student in quest of their individual level of ability and preparation to
accept challenge. The teacher will
verify for understanding and comprehension of level by written and oral
questioning. Students will discover with high interest the French culture
of other French speaking countries of the world. They will study their differences and
develop new ways of thinking and developing intellectual thinking. The students will extend their
understanding of grammatical structures and cultural paradigms. In French SL,
high level concepts in French are introduced to students who build their
comprehension toward the instruction given.
Comprehension comes first, then application. At present
there are no resources in the school library that support the French
curriculum. Materials are being
researched and sought to make more resources available for our IB students Topics:
Semester 1 Exploration of history, geography, cultural aspects, music,
cuisine (specialties), art, and literature of France, Belgium, Switzerland,
Luxembourg, Monaco, Quebec (Canada), and French Polynesia (Tahiti). Semester 2 Exploration of history, geography, cultural aspects, music,
cuisine (specialties), art, and literature of Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique,
New Caledonia, Madagascar, French Guiana, Ivory Coast, and Central African
Republic. Authentic francophone text and materials (stories, poems,
textbooks, recipes, maps, newspapers, magazines, documentaries, travel
brochures, catalogues, videos, music, films) will be
used to explore these French Speaking Countries of the world. Grammar Topics: (Including reviewed material) Verb Tense: Present / Past Tense / Imperfect / Future /
Perfect / Pluperfect / Future Perfect. Verb Moods: Indicative / Subjunctive / Imperative /
Conditional Verb Voices: Active / Passive. Adjective
Uses: Formation / Irregular / Comparative / Demonstrative / Interrogative /
Indefinite. Pronoun Uses:
Personal / Reflexive / Interrogative / Indefinite / Possessive / Relative.

School Based and classroom Monitoring Students will compose in French daily in their journal,
practicing grammatical structures being reviewed and learned. Students will complete the sections of the
Individual Oral and the Interactive Oral Activity in accordance with the
International Baccalaureate guidelines. The internal assessment will be valued at 40% of student’s
final grade as follows: Journal 10% Individual Oral 15% Interactive Oral 15% External Assessment: Students will be required to translate passages, and answer
relation questions. Students will be
asked to write in-depth answers to questions related on the topics. Students
will complete written productions in accordance with the International Baccalaureate
guidelines. The external assessment will be valued at 60% of student’s
final grade as follows: Translation 15% Questions/Answers 15% Written Productions 30% Resources:
