Course description:

This course is designed to prepare students for the IB German Language B standard level examination.  Students are invited to appreciate and develop a deeper understanding of German Language and Culture.  Students will participate in various activities such as reading of novels, International newspapers, and magazines, listening to live German television, writing essays (diaries, newspaper articles, writing texts in various formats, and projects).  Students will exchange discussions, oral presentations, use of target language in class (with the teacher and amongst peers), debates, and projects (audio, video).

 

This course will offer students maximum communication and interaction opportunities in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the exploration of a wide range of Germanic texts from the wide world of German speakers.  Students will develop spontaneous aural expressions related to daily life and Germanic culture.  They will develop an awareness of global, cultural, social, and political issues.  The course will allow students to reach a fluency level in writing and speaking.

 

Students will explore a variety of authentic texts and media that will provide an in-context grammar review.  Students will research topics on history of different German speaking countries of the world including their geography, music, arts, literature, cultural aspects, as well as their political and social issues.  As a result, students will develop an appreciation for global perspectives.

 

Individual practice and collaborative partnering are constantly provided to increase participation which is evaluated by teacher and peers.

 

The classroom is organized in a various level approach with each student in quest of their individual level of ability and preparation to accept challenge.  The teacher will verify for understanding and comprehension of level by written and oral questioning.

 

Students will discover with high interest the German speaking cultures and countries of the world.  They will study their differences and develop new ways of thinking and developing intellectual thinking.  The students will extend their understanding of grammatical structures and cultural paradigms.

 

In German SL, higher level concepts in German are introduced to students who build their comprehension toward the instruction given.  Comprehension comes first, then application.
