IB History of the Grades
Offered: 11-12 Credit:
1.0 for 1 year 2.0 for 2 years Course description:
This course in the first year
is an in-depth study of North American History from colonial times to the 20th
Century. The history of The 2nd year
curriculum will focus on 20th Century topics, 1895 to 1995. Additionally this curriculum
will be taught to connect the regional study topics for History of the Presenting historical explanations from an
international perspective is an objective of the history course and, therefore,
candidates will be expected to study the histories of a selection of
countries and themes within the chosen region. The study of a country’s
national history should be in the comparative, regional framework of the
appropriate regional option. The countries will include

college level and will require daily homework. There are also major writing
projects that will be due each term. Internationalism:
The topics chosen will reinforce the international nature of the concepts,
ie: Colonialism on an international scale, exploration and settlement
patterns etc. Concepts from the pre-IB course AP European History will be
reviewed and connected to material taught in this course. Subscriptions:
NY Times available on the internet, The Week ( a current events
periodical) available in the classroom. Full internet access in two different

and Role Single Party States - On our block schedule, each unit should take
approximately 5 class periods each. Topics 1, 3 and 5 will be taught. Topic 2
will be touched on. Topics 4 and 6 will not be taught. The Prescribed subject will be #3: The Cold War
1960-1979. Students will also complete an historical
investigation. A paperback library of 20th Century topics will be
accumulated and readings assigned with student’s turning in one page synopses
of the book. Assessment:
As per the IB Guidelines, students will be assessed for HL as follows: External Assessment, 80% consisting of 3 written papers Paper 1 20% A document-based paper set on prescribed subjects drawn from the 20th Century World History topics, 3 sections consisting of four questions on each of 3 prescribed subjects. · Section A – four questions on prescribed subject 1 · Section B -- four questions on prescribed subject 2 · Section C – four questions on prescribed subject 3 Paper 2 25% An essay paper based on the 20th Century World History topics. The examination paper will comprise 30 questions, five on each of the six 20th Century World History topics. Two questions to be answered, each chosen from a different topic. Paper 3 35% Five separate essay papers, each based on one of the regional options. Each examination paper will comprise 25 questions. Three questions to be answered. Internal Assessment 20% Historical Investigation to be internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated. To prepare students for the IB Assessments, students at PHS will write as follows: Year 1 Assessments Units 1 & 4 – Practice AP DBQ Practice IB DBQ Practice AP Essay Practice IB Essay Unit 5 – Paper #1 Unit 7 – 2 AP DBQ 1 IB DBQ 2 AP Essays 1 IB Essay Unit 8 – Paper #2 Unit 10 – AP DBQ IB DBQ AP Essay IB Essay Year 2 Assessments Each
term there will be practice internal assessments using 2 IB essays and IB
practice exam. Practice external assessments during terms 2 and 3. The
historical investigation paper will also be due. Paper
#3 will be an essay response paper taken from the 100 year time period. What
class time we have in August will be used to review the main ideas of IB

study Units 1-5. December will be used toreview the course thus far and take

Units 6-10. April will be used to review the second portion of the course as
