Name of the course:

Spanish B, SL/HL

Course description:

Course Description

Designed for students with 2-5 years of prior study of Spanish, this course offers students the continued process of learning to speak Spanish at an advanced level and with a deeper understanding of Spanish culture.  With an emphasis is on interactive communications  in Spanish, the course focuses  high level of Spanish proficiency in Linquistic Skills

ü      listening

ü      speaking

ü      reading

ü      writing

These skills are developed through the study and use of a range of written and spoken texts .

Spanish B comprises three fully integrated parts:

ü      Language: development of the four linguistic skills (listed above) and handling the language systems (grammar, syntax, etc) accurately

ü      Texts: Use of a wide range of written and oral texts selected in view of communicative competence and reflective of the entire Hispanic world (i.e. Latin America and Castilla)

ü      Cultural awareness: materials studied reflect the various Spanish speaking cultures designed to increase cultural, social, political understanding and greater global perspective. (The large base of Spanish speakers from all over the world that live in our community provide a valuable supplemental resource)

Juniors and seniors in this course should be of serious intent to pursue the IB Spanish.  The proficiencies of comprehending, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish will be demonstrated through the rigors of the IB examination.

(HL contains more literary texts and activities, and demands a higher level of sophistication than the SL.)

Internationalism is inherent in this course.  It begins with the wide variety of cultures and societies of the Spanish speaking world and then goes beyond.  It goes beyond the 45 countries in which Spanish is an official or major language.  Internationalism even reaches beyond the fact that Spanish is an official language of the United Nations, and is the fourth most spoken language.  Internationalism in this course reaches beyond the barriers of a language, it reaches out to its sister languages of Portuguese and Italian and beyond.  This is because in order to become an effective Spanish speaker, students will be exposed to the ways in which languages shapes thinking processes and view points.  The way that an event processed and described in English is a different perception than how the same event may be processed and described in Spanish.  By forming different perceptions to think and communicate in Spanish, students will practice different perceptions which can lead to greater international awareness and understanding.
