1.  INTERNSHIPS & APPRENTICESHIPS

 

Work in a business or with a professional in the community to gain valuable experience in a career field of interest

      * 11th or 12th grade or summertime

      * Covers 2 periods in your schedule

      * Earns elective credit at PHS

      * Take prerequisite Pathway courses

      * Register with Mr. Olsen

Examples: UVRMC PSD Elementary Schools,

 Provo Police, Daily Herald,

Murdock Travel,

All About Pets,

Highland Woodworks, Thanksgiving Point

2. MOUNTAINLAND APPLIED TECH. COLLEGE (MATC)

         * Learn specific job skills

        * 11th or 12th grade

        * Spend ½ day at MATC; ½ at PHS

        * $50 refundable deposit to register

        * Some skill certifications & state                         licensures available

        * Earns Advanced Studies credit

        * Register with Mr. Olsen

Examples: Home Building Construction, Chef Prep, EMT, Computer Technology, Computer Networking, Biotechnology, Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Veterinary Assistant, Exercise Science, Multimedia & Design, & Cosmetology

3.            Advanced Classes at

 BYU or UVU

 

Register for academic courses at BYU or advanced vocational courses at UVSC (after finishing Pathway courses at PHS)

     * Take classes during day or evening

     * Receive both college & PHS credit

     * Student must pay own tuition

     * For BYU, student must have 3.6 GPA

     * 2 college credit hours = 1 PHS period

     * Work with Mrs. Marshall to get admission forms & arrange class schedule 

4.  COSMETOLOGY OR OTHER   SPECIALTY SCHOOLS

 

Attend Cosmetology School in 12th grade

     * Attend at Dallas Roberts, Bon Losee

     * PSD pays up to $2000.00 tuition

     * MATC Program total cost $2000

     * Evans & Von Curtis – no $ assistance

     * Receive Advanced Studies credit

     * Finish all required classes in 11th                      grade to make room for full day                    Cosmetology experience in 12th

     * Plan ahead with your counselor ASAP

     * Register with Mr. Olsen

5. EARLY GRADUATION       SCHOLARSHIP

 

* Receive $1000 for graduating one year  early & $500 for half year early

* Must use scholarship at a Utah college  within one year of graduation

* Use Home study, Summer school, &                Internship to finish credits early

6. NEW CENTURY            SCHOLARSHIP

 

* Graduate with Associates Degree by the end of high school – Sept. 1

* Receive 75% tuition scholarship for next two years of Bachelor’s degree in Utah

* Meet with counselor &/or Mrs. Marshall ASAP to plan 11th &12th grade college credit classes

 

7. UVU CONCURRENT         ENROLLMENT

Earn college credit by taking classes at PHS from PHS teachers... for FREE tuition

   * Eligible in 11th or 12th grade

   * Meet GPA requirement (3.0 for academic            & 2.0 for vocational classes)

   * Pay $35 admission fee

   * UVU credit is transferable to all                     colleges in Utah

BYU accepts some credit as elective

   * Example classes: Food Catering,                       German, EMT, Child Care, English 1010, Physiology, Drafting, Auto, Graphics, Electronics, AP US Govt.

8.  UVU DISTANCE        

LEARNING

Earn college credit by taking classes at PHS from UVU teachers by interactive TV

   * Eligible in 11th or 12th grade

  *Meet GPA requirement of 3.0

   * Pay $35 admissions fee + books (grants            are available to help with book costs)

   * Most classes cover 2 PHS periods

   * Classes last one semester, are taught

         M,W,F or T,TH, & meet GE requirements.

   * UVU credit is transferable to all                        colleges in Utah

    * Current schedule is on phs.provo.edu

9. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)

International Baccalaureate (IB)     

Receive college credit by passing exams administered in May

   * Take Honors courses as prerequisites

   * Be prepared for tough classwork!

   AP

* Pay @  $80 per AP exam

   * Receive 6-12 college credits once you

          enroll in your college or university

   * Choose from 19 AP Classes at PHS in

          Foreign Language, English, Math

          Social Studies, Science, Music, & Art

IB

Receive up to 30 Credits by taking the IB Curriculum and paying for and Passing Exams

 

10. NCAA ELIGIBILITY TO PLAY  SPORTS IN COLLEGE

Prepare NOW to be recruited for an athletic scholarship!  The NCAA requires athletes to meet academic standards:

   * Graduate from high school

   * Achieve a satisfactory Index score                       between your ACT score & your GPA

   * Complete 16  University Prep courses                   (This # is a change)

   * Check with Mrs. Allan in the                                  College/Career Center for a list of PHS            “NCAA Approved Core Courses”

11.  PREPARING FOR THE    

MILITARY

 

*   For Academies & Univ. ROTC, take                   Univ. Prep courses & Computer classes       

*Work especially hard in Math / Science

* Maintain physical fitness & give service

* Meet with recruiters when they visit PHS

* Talk with adults or friends who’ve served

* Enroll in Air Force Jr ROTC to learn more

* Take the ASVAB test

12.  SCHOLARSHIPS 

              

* Begin keeping written resume of awards,           leadership positions, extracurricular

      activities, service, employment, clubs

* Register for PLAN, PSAT, & ACT prep tests

* Maintain high GPA in Univ. Prep classes

* Do an Internship or other career training

* In 11th & 12th grade, read the PHS Parent            Newsletter for Scholarship updates

* Meet w/Mrs. Allan in the College/Career Center
